ABOUT ME

Aspiring data engineer, software developer, and generally wanting to have an impact

Photo of Me

Welcome to my website! Im Jack, a third-year engineering student at the University of Cambridge. I love modelling and analysing the world with data and statistics, using software and technology to solve problems. I thrive on tackling challenges that combine creativity and technical expertise, whether it's diving into cutting-edge engineering projects, exploring the power of statistics, or bringing innovative ideas to life.

Beyond academics, you will find me either snowboarding, creating music, or trying to learn a new hobby or skill. I am currently running Varsity Trip and working as a merch consultant to keep me busy outside of the engineering world. My journey so far has been driven by a love for novelty and learning, and the belief that technology has the potential to make a lasting, positive impact on the world.

Feel free to explore my work here, enjoy!

Fusion Fuel Cycle Engineer Summer Placement

  • 3-month summer internship at a nuclear fusion company, that uses HTS technologies for magnetic confinement
  • Performed literature research for tritium compatible technologies
  • Presented the top technologies to be used in a tritium fuel cycle, for both current technology capabilities as well as future
  • Aided in developing a python model to simulate a tritium fuel cycle
  • Ark Data Centres

    Engineering Intern

  • 4 month internship at a privately owned multi-billion pound data centre enterprise that builds and operates UK data centres
  • Reporting to COO, worked in 4 departments: civil, technical operations, design, and real estate services with CBRE
  • Testing and assessing onboarding programmes in order for the company to eventually develop a graduate scheme
  • Prepared a research report on emerging data centre technologies which was presented to the head of design
  • Varsity Trip

    Director and Co-President

  • Director of a private limited company that runs the largest student ski trip in the world
  • Selecting and managing a team of ten to organise the trip for over 2700 students
  • Overseeing a budget of over £2.3 million; executive decision making across all independent work streams; communication and contract negotiation with multiple ski resorts, businesses, and tour operators

Training and applying logistic classification models to datasets. The figure shows the results using wide radial basis functions.
    Classification
Created a real-time flood warning system that worked on live data from the internet using Python. Extrapolation of data and best fit curves were used to try and warn areas in advance.
    Flood Warning
Using PCA to correlate gene expression to tumour diagnoses, from data of over 10,000 genes.
    Principal Component Analysis
Investigating the benefits and behaviours of various window functions for FFTs.
    Windowing
Exploring techniques for fitting regression curves to data.
    Regression
Creating and analysing different distributions of both known and unknown origins. This involved creating distributions from samples of a uniform distribution using inverse CDF.
    Distribution analysis
Designed and coded an autopilot for a virtual aircraft control system.
    Aircraft autopilot
Analysis of measured vibrations from a two-pronged coupled cantilever, and comparing results to theory.
